Before I get to today’s topic, I would like to encourage people to go back to look at our Nationals preview. Clearly my “worst team in baseball” labelling has riled up some Nats fan, not to mention my o-fer vs the Mets prediction. I bring it up, because today’s team in the spotlight, the Baltimore Orioles, will challenge the Nats for the title of “worst team in baeball.”
Before I get too far, I would like take this time to remind eveyone to visit my partner in this feature, SkyKing162. We take very different approaches to this exercise, but quite often end up with similar answers (except for Rick Ankiel)…Go Figure! I am sure as we get to more of the upper echelon teams, we will see some striking desparities.
Now to the Orioles. On paper, they have a slightly better team than the Nats, mainly because the have some legitimate starting pitching in Jeremy Guthrie, Daniel Cabrera and Adam Loewen. That not to say we have the makings of a dominant staff, but at least a respectable one. Of course, Cabrera will have to stop walking a hitter every other inning to start to reach his potential. He’s teetering on the bust label now.

It’s hard to believe that we are just about a quarter of the way done with our 30 in 30 feature. Thank you to all that have participated to date, either by commenting, linking or participating in our roundtables. Day 7 moves our attention to the NL Central. And no, Cardinal fans, God did not create the Cardinals on the seventh day. Give Sky’s Redbird preview a looksie as well.
Last year, the Cardinals hit 141 roundtrippers. With the news that Albert Pujols will try to play with at torn elbow ligament, which will require reconstructive surgery, that number will be sure to go down this year as he accounted for 23% of the team’s Home Runs last year.
Let’s face it … when you lose one of the five best position players in baseball, your team is going to struggle and the Cards are going to have a tough time competing. The only thing they have going for them is that they compete in the NL Central, quite possibly the worst division in baseball from top to bottom. There is a Cubs joke in there somewhere, but I can’t quite get my finger on it. Please feel free to leave one in the comments section.

Day 6 of 30 and we move on to the San Francisco Giants (Please check out Sky’s preview too!).
Speaking of moving on, I understand that a certain outfielder is no longer with the team. I jest of course, this post is about the 2008 Giants, and with Barry Bonds in the rearview mirror, I intend to look at the team that will be in uniform, not the prima donna that is still looking for a job.
One of my favorite players in the league is a brand new Giant, Aaron Rowand. He will bring a different type of attitude to the Giants, because he is a player that gives it all for the game and the team. I am willing to bet he and Omar Vizquel will get along very well. All I know is that San fran Fans will appreciate Rowand the first time he does this.

OK, when I said 30 teams in 30 days, I intententionally left out the qualifier “consecutive” in the description, because I anticipated days like yesterday, where the Greek felt about as good as Jose Canseco’s chances at the Hall of Fame.
Needless to say, it is time to march on to Day 5, and the real Los Angeles team, the Dodgers. Be sure to check out Sky as well.
The Dodgers “cranked out” a total of 129 Home Runs last year, but their power prospects look to be on the upside with the addition of Andruw Jones. The biggest acquisition news for the Dodgers though was their new manager, Joe Torre. But before we get too far into our analysis of the upcoming Dodgers season.
Let’s first take a time out to pay homage to the person who regularly adorns this site in Dodger Blue. No it’s not Ramon spelled backwards, or Jeff Foxworthy … I don’t mean Jeff Kent or the newly acquired Andruw Jones. It is, of course, Dodger Fan and TV Witch, Alyssa Milano.
Sometimes I do wonder if we here at Home Run Derby are more dedicated to the women connected to baseball more than the Home Run (not that it’s a bad thing). In fact Richie, I think we need to go back to our old tag line, “Because Chicks dig the long ball!” It is certainly more appropriate.
Anyway, I digress, back to baseball. The Dodgers are hard to figure out. They have good talent, but tend to see more than their fair share of injuries. I certainly believe they will hit more Home Runs this year. I do believe they have as good a chance to win the NL West as the Rockies and Diamondbacks do, especially if Rafael Furcal is back at 100%. So Let’s get crackin’.

Day 4 … another team - The Halos.
If you haven’t already, please check out our first three installments on the Royals, Twins and Nationals. Also, check out SkyKing’s opinion on the Angels as well.
The Angels hit the same number of Home Runs as the Washington Nationals in 2007, a mere 123. The big difference is that LA parlayed that anemic power into a 94 win season capped with a AL West Divison Title and playoff appearance (well “parlayed” may be the wrong word, “in spite of” is more appropriate), while the Nats just plain sucked. But before I go any further, let me get this out of the way.
OK, now that we have that out of the way … let’s turn our attention to the Angels.
Clearly the lack of power doesn’t bother this team. Although, this year, they should see an uptick in the power numbers with the aquisition of former Twins CF Torii Hunter. His acquisition probably brings a bigger net Home Run number because in addition to the 20-something Home Runs Torii will hit this year, he will bring back an additional half dozen with his glove.
Let’s get to the predictions.

We are at the 10% mark for our 30 in 30 feature. We are now at Day 3, and that brings us to, in my humble opinion, the worst team in the majors, the Washington Nationals (Tampa Bay Rays fans everywhere, all three of them, are breathing a sigh of relief). The team hit a measlely 123 Home Runs last year, but more telling is their fundamental lack of pitching. No starter had more than 7 wins last year (Matt Chico), and the leader in games won was reliever Jon Rauch (Kenny Williams’ favorite player) with a seismic 8 wins.

This is a team that is still starting Christian Guzman at short. Let’s face it the best thing the Nationals have going for them is the new ballpark. Anything has to be better than RFK, but I am excited to see what the new park looks like. My guess is it will be a hitters park (most new parks are), and that should add to this team’s struggles.

Day 1 is in the books and the Royals are now in the rearview mirror. On to Day 2 of our journey to preview 30 teams in 30 days. Be sure to check out SkyKing’s preview too! Next team up is the Twinkies. And boy how things have changed for the tenants of The Triple-H Metrodome. And no, when I say Triple H, I don’t mean this guy…or anyone else in Degeneration X for that matter.

Anyway I digress. This should be a year filled with uncertainity for the Twins. Lots of new faces and quite a few question marks in the starting staff with the departure of Johan Santana, and to a lesser extent Carlos Silva, who will be replaced in the rotation with talented but unproved kids like Kevin Slowey and Scott Baker. Not to mention the return of Francisco Liriano from major arm surgery.
Francisco….Francisco. That’s fun to say (anyone who knows what movie that quote is from please chime in in the comments section - it’s a pretty easy one. maybe Richie can offer a prize- do we have HRD t-shirts, yet?).

And so we begin our journey to preview 30 teams in 30 days. Be sure to check out SkyKing’s preview too!
We start in Kansas City (order was determined by team homeruns in 2007), a team that hit a paltry 102 Home Runs last year on its way to slugging .388 as a team. Just to provide some contrast, the Milwaukee Brewers hit over two times as many dingers (231) and slugged almost 70 points higher (.456).
Good lord it is hard to be a Royal fan. It is even harder to talk about the long ball for a team that had only two players: John Buck (18) and rookie Alex Gordon (15) hit double digit Home Runs last year.
Surely the addition of Jose Guillen will add another double digit home run hitter to the team, but when your other big offensive addition is Miguel Olivo…you got problems. Oh wait, they did add Alberto Callaspo too! Yep, I don’t know him either. Apparently, he came via trade from Arizona.

Home Run Derby is undertaking a collaborative effort with our friend and colleague, SkyKing162.
We will examine all thirty major league teams in 30 days, beginning Saturday, March 1st. Given that most sites will do the typical predictions of the season, Sky and the Greek are going to try to be a little different.
I would even think that our friend and Patron Saint, JoBu, would be proud of the work we embark on.
Sky will certainly utilize his passion for baseball and his stat geek affinity, while the Greek will continue to pull his ideas out of his ass while occasionally glancing at baseball-reference.com. We may even hear from Richie Rich from time to time (although I officially ban him from trying to hijack the Cubs post, that puppy is mine).
Like I mentioned, we are going to try to be a little different.
Yes, we will give a win total prediction for each team. But look for more interesting aspects of the preview: the bold prediction, the best case for a team, and a focus on the stat we hold near in dear to our hearts here at HRD. That’s right, the swing that is the most cherished in baseball; the one that has resulted in countless catch phrases such as
- “Ding Dong the Pitch is Dead”
- “Dial ‘8′ for Long Distance”
- “Back, Back, Back …”
- “It’s a Goner”
- “Hey Hey”
- “Holy Cow”
- “You Can Put It On the Board, YES!”
- “Here’s the Pitch, Oh Shit!” (my personal favorite)
Yep, the Home Run will be featured prominently in our 30 Teams in 30 Days previews.
It all begins March 1st, so stay tuned. We will be addressing teams in reverse order of team Home Runs hit in 2007.
First up … the Kansas City Royals – Quick some one tell ESPN’s Rob Neyer (subscription required)!
