MLB Mascot Brackets - Righty and Lefty vs The Racing Pierogies
Posted by: Richie Rich in Mascot Brackets, Mascots, Pirates, Red SoxIn the Furrie Division battle of “What the heck are those things,” Raymond is still leading Southpaw (65%-35%) but the lead has been dwindling lately. I got an email from Southpaw the other day (I really did) … he’s doing what he can to win.
Let’s cut away to the Critter Division for a matchup between two teams whose other mascots have already lost in the First Round. Can they defend the honor of either Wally the Green Monster or the Captain Jolly Roger the Pirate?
#4 Righty and Lefty (Red Sox) vs #5 The Racing Pierogies (Pirates)
I will give the Red Sox credit for trying here. Lefty and Righty are indeed a pair of red socks. With hats. And arms and legs.
These two walking Socks (okay, Sox) showed up in 2003, but I have no idea if they’re still around. I think they were introduced as an alternative mascot for the foot fetishers.
I couldn’t find any video of Righty and Lefty … so here’s another picture. Wally hopes Red Sox Nation shows up for his friends (cause they didn’t for him).
Yum. Pierogies reflect the history and culture of the Eastern European heritage of Pittsburgh.
Before we go any further, the Racing Pierogies are a rip off of the famous Milwaukee Racing Sausages. But that doesn’t stop them from maintaining a decent rivalry with the Sausages. In fact, the Sausages and the Pierogi get together twice a year (I’m hungry now for some reason) in a home-and-home relay race showdown.
There’s five anthropomorphic Pierogies running around. Cheese Chester, Oliver Onion, Jalapeno Hannah, Sauerkraut Sal, and the forcibly retired Potato Pete. Shockingly, the Pierogies are sponsored by Mrs. T - who coincidentally makes frozen Pierogies.
Here they are in action.
I think the Pierogies would love to match up against the Sausages again in this tournament (which they could - in the next round).
Who is the better Mascot - Righty and Lefty or the Racing Pierogies ?
- The Racing Pierogies (Pittsburgh Pirates) (69%)
- Righty and Lefty (Boston Red Sox) (31%)
Total Votes: 62

This is a pretty tough matchup once again, but I voted for Righty and Lefty.
The Pierogies, as Rich said, are rip offs of the sausages while Righty and Lefty are an original idea that can help teach children the difference between left and right.
Oh yeah, and I’m a Red Sox fan, but that has nothing to do with it at all…I swear.

I’m typically against rip-offs … and the pierogies are definitely rip-offs. But righty and lefty seem to be some kind of support group for Wally who sucks in his own right. What are they thinkin’ in Boston … “Gee, Wally blows so let’s just toss some more crap out there and see if that works.”
Anyway, I’ve been to Boston and Pittsburgh. Boston has this East coast attitude thing while Pittsburgh is quite down to earth. So it’s tough to vote for anything from Boston. Speaking of Pittsburgh, I strongly suggest a trip to Primanti Brothers in the strip district in Pittsburgh for a sandwich masterpiece.
The Pierogies get my vote.
