MLB Mascot Brackets - Lou Seal vs Billy the Marlin
Posted by: Richie Rich in Giants, Marlins, Mascot Brackets, MascotsIn our other current matchup, FredBird of the Cardinals is whomping the Blue Jays’ mascot Ace … it ain’t even close …
But let’s go with a matchup of Aquatic Animals this time with our first contest from the Critter Division …
#3 Lou Seal (SF Giants) vs #6 Billy the Marlin (Marlins)
I love it when mascots reflect something about an area’s geography or history.
Lou Seal hits on both of those for the Giants, as he represents the seals and sea lions which frequent the San Francisco Bay as well as the San Francisco Seals, a minor league baseball team which was in San Fran from 1903-1957.
The only issue I have with Lou Seal is that the first time you hear his name, you think the mascot is a girl named Lucille. Maybe he’s transgendered or something … we are talking San Francisco here.
There’s plenty of video of Lou Seal out there, but this one is the funniest. Even if he gets upstaged by the Beat Boxer in it.
Like Lou Seal, Billy the Marlin represents some of the history of the Miami area.
The marlin is a native sport fish to the area and is also the name of the old Miami Marlins, a minor league team from 1956-60 and 1982-88. Billy Marlin is also a play on the name of former Yankees manager Billy Martin. RIP.
Billy occasionally gets to hang with the Marlins cheerleading squad. We’ve talked about the Marlins Mermaids before.
You wouldn’t believe how many Billy the Marlin videos there are out there. But most of them are of him outside the stadium doing weird crap.
Hey Billy - tickets are still available. For EVERY Marlins home game.
Who is the better Mascot - Lou Seal or Billy the Marlin ?
- Billy the Marlin (Florida Marlins) (80%)
- Lou Seal (San Francisco Giants) (20%)

Yikes. Like many bad marketing creations, Lou Seal wears cheesy sunglasses and a backward hat in an effort to look “cool.” Not a good idea. What’s next, a raised collar on a polo shirt? Anyway, this look is very similar to that worn by Poochie from the 1997 Simpsons episode, “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie show.” Easy choice … my vote goes to Billy.

Strong points by jimmy, and I must add that from the front, it looks like Lou is wearing a Giants yamika (not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just an observation). It seems like they were really stretching with Lou, plus he could soon be replaced by Sally Subpoena. Billy might be a representative of an expansion team, but at least that team is better at buying championship teams than the Giants. Billy wins.
