El Guapo update - The first BobbleBelly
Posted by: Richie Rich in El Guapo, MLB Weirdness, Red Sox, YouTube
If you’ve read this site for a while, you’ll know that one of our all-time favorite ballplayers is Rich Garces … aka, The Handsome One.
EL GUAPO
The porcine right-handed reliever who became a legend while pitching for the Boston Red Sox before he was unceremoniously DFA’d to baseball obscurity.
So earlier this year, we were thrilled to hear that the rotund one was attempting to return to the big leagues.
After a successful stint with the Aguilas del Zulia in the Venezuelan Professional Winter League, he signed with the Nashua Pride of the Canadian-American League - which might be the lowest rung in baseball Hell …
.
He can still fill out a uniform.
We haven’t heard anything for a while … so it’s time to look at El Guapo’s stats with the Pride.
In 29 innings over 26 appearances, Garces is 5-1 with a 3.72 ERA and 13 Saves in 14 opportunities. Opponents are batting .234 against him. Not too shabby until you consider this is the unaffiliated Can-Am League.
But wait … we found some video of El Guapo talking about his time with the Red Sox and the Nashua Pride. Shot about a month ago.
And of course, the minor leagues being the minor leagues, on July 27, 2007, the Pride had a giveaway. The El Guapo BobbleHead. Of course, it wasn’t a BobbleHead - it was an El Guapo Bobble Belly.
They’re going for around $27 on eBay right now. I really shouldn’t have posted this, considering I don’t have mine yet.
Thanks to theLefty.net for the video.
