Time for another Mascot Matchup! Let’s go to the Primate Division …

#4 Rally Monkey (Anaheim Angels) vs. #5 Mr. Red (Cincinnati Reds)

The Rally MonkeyMr. Red of the Cincinnati Reds

The Angels Rally Monkey#4 Rally Monkey

Born on June 6th, 2000 while the Angels were losing at home to the Giants. The scoreboard operators put up a clip from “Ace Ventura” of a monkey jumping around with “RALLY MONKEY” superimposed on it. The Angels scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win and the monkey was a smash hit.

In 2002, during the Angels’ Championship season, the Monkey became a National Phenomenon after they beat the Yanks in the playoff and beat the Giants in the World Series.

The Rally Monkey wants some Noise

Now, the Angels use the Monkey as enticement for their fans to make noise with an announcement on the scoreboard … “If you make noise, he will come.” The website Rallymonkey.com was keeping track of the Monkey’s success in games, but seems to have after he was 38-103 from 2003-2005.

Here’s the first time the Rally Monkey ever made an appearance.

Mr Redlegs#5 Mr. Red/Mr. Redlegs

This is actually two mascots, but one is clean-shaven and modern while one has a mustache and old-style togs.

It’s the same baseball-headed mascot.

Get over it.

Mr Red and Marge Schott

Mr. Red was hugley popular during the heyday of “The Big Red Machine” during the 70’s, as was everything Reds-related. He disappeared for 15 years from 1982-1996. Now he roams the Queen City again.

It is beginning to look like Mr. Red needs a Rally Monkey of his own.

    I hate that damn monkey….

  3. Shawn says:

Deny the monkey! Vote Mr. Red!

  4. fiesta says:

Yes! Ship the monkey back to the zoo. Plus, where would baseball be without cool facial hair? Richie already highlighted some good baseball beards earlier, but what about good moustaches like Rollie FIngers or Gorman Thomas? Mr. Redlegs wins on that account.

I can’t get past Mr. Red’s expression and costume. The Red’s have a great retro-looking illustration of Mr. Red on their web site … there he appears confident and powerful, like Pete Rose in his prime. However, something went terribly, terribly wrong with the translation of that image to a 3-D costume … the power, confidence, and dare I say manliness are gone. What’s left is a creepy, empty gaze. Thus, I voted for the monkey in spite of the comments above.
