Triple Crown wins the Home Run Derby 1st Half Championship
Posted by: Richie Rich in Contests, The Derby
New Blood in our little Home Run Derby contest is always nice.
Usually it’s fresh meat.
Thanks for the donation, guys … you know who you are.
However, in the guise of Triple Crown, Master-Batters, and The Great Hambino … sometimes it’s not to be taken lightly. These three Derby newcomers finished 1-2-3 in the Derby 1st Half standings and will take home cash prizes for their 2007 Home Run prognostications. And just think … they’ll all be in the running for the 2nd Half and Full Year prizes as well.
Triple Crown (270 HR) pulled off the closest finish in the Derby’s four-year history, besting Master-Batters (269 HR) by one Home Run for the 2007 1st Half Championship.
And that one Home Run (by Jason Bay vs the Cubs) was terribly important as M-B held the tiebreaker with a better AB/HR ratio. Phil has called Triple Crown the “Team of Destiny” for weeks now … and amazingly, he pulled it off.
Jared and his Master-Batters made it interesting on the final Sunday and had tied Triple Crown with Home Runs from Sheffield and Burrell (which would have given M-B the title) but fell just short, finishing in 2nd Place. M-B opens the 2nd Half with a ten-HR lead over 3rd Place.
Third Place was also hotly contested over the weekend, as we saw 1908 Cubs quickly surge to a money position, only to be overtaken by two teams. And one of them, The Great Hambino (259 HR) took home the 3rd Place crown by a measly Home Run over Hackers. Phildelphia’s Pat Burrell provided the difference-making dinger for Jason.
When games start up on Thursday, we’ll have the continuation of the fullseason Home Run Derby Contest, plus everyone gets new life and starts from scratch for the 2nd Half Contest.
Thanks for playing!

First of all, I would like to thank Gary Sheffield and Barry Bonds…if it wasn’t for you, this couldn’t have happened.
Picking Burrell over the likes of Utley, Griffey, and Torii wasn’t good, but at least I didn’t pick Tejada. And for all of those who didn’t take Morneau (and there are 26 of you)……………..suckers
Baseball is a game of averages. And if that’s true, then I can’t stay mad at the Bostonians (Ortiz and Manny) …they’re due for a big second half.
And one last note. I hate Jason Bay and I hope he reads this. HEY GERMAN BOY…GO BACK TO GERMANIA!!!

While I firmly believe that Canada is still reeling from their lampooning in South Park the Movie, I think the entire country is in smiles this morning knowing that their own homegrown product was able to defeat the likes of the big, bad, chemically enhanced products of American chemistry.
I will allow MB to get big second halfs out of Boston x 2, but only if Andruw Jones wakes up and realizes he is in a contract year….Two words my gold glove loving, non-hitting bust…Mendoza Line
Best of luck in the second half to all. And don’t forgot - those of us with the MLB extra inning package - these are the last 3 nights of the year to go to bed early until November.
