Spare Time + Thumbtacks = a portrait of Cal Ripken Jr?
Posted by: Richie Rich in HRD Interviews, Orioles
Spare time is what makes America great. Writing taunts in the snow. a motorized Lego Miller Park, and Lego baseball figures, and a bodypainted female Phillies fan (NSFW) are recent examples.
Want more proof?
Watch this time-lapse video of a Baltimore Orioles fan creating a mosaic of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. … using nothing but thumbtacks …
I love this country – that is awesome. Patrick Star from Spongebob even makes an appearance.
The only way that could be cooler is if he had used 2,362 thumbtacks. But it probably wouldn’t have looked as good.
According to the artist, it took 30 hours and 10,115 thumbtacks. The materials cost a little shy of $400.
Hopefully, we’ll have some words from the artist for you. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: We’ve got an interview with the artist Dustin Barkley …. and pics of his beer bottle cap mosaic of Mr. T.

He looks like he could be a Cuban revolutionist figure in the tack portrait.
Maybe future tyrants of Baseball will have shirts with that image on it.

Any chance he started with a complete work of art (created off camera using a thumbtack-by-numbers sort of guide), pulled the tacks out one by one beginning at the bottom, and then reversed the video (with a decent video editing program) to achieve the effect?

I think he is using a pixelated version of the photograph. Each pixel is then replaced by a thumbtack.

Get off his back. It was pretty cool. I am sure there were some mistakes, redo’s and do-overs but he did it. Unless you can prove him wrong, accept it for what it is worth. Good Job
