MVP's take it in the PujolsWords have a funny way of biting people in the ass.  Or their Pujols.

In 2006, Ryan Howard won the National League Most Valuable Player Award … prompting runner-up Albert Pujols to say the following …

I see it this way: Someone who doesn’t take his team to the playoffs doesn’t deserve to win the MVP

Pujols had the sour grapes in 2006 after leading his St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series Championship while Howard’s Philadelphia Phillies didn’t make the playoffs.

Fast Forward to today … Albert Pujols won the 2008 NL MVP, beating out runner-up Ryan Howard.  Howard’s Phillies won the World Series while Pujols’ Cardinals didn’t make the playoffs.

OOPS. You can’t write this stuff any better.

I would love to hear Pujols say “I really don’t deserve this” when he accepts the award. Even though I think Pujols is 100 times more deserving of the 2008 NL MVP than Ryan Howard.

By being named MVP, Pujols will get a $200,000 bonus from the Cardinals, per his contract.

It’s all a moot point. Pujols was better and “more valuable” in 2006 and was lightyears better in 2008. Ryan Howard is a terrible one-dimensional baseball player who is proof that the ability to hit home runs is enormously overrated compared to the ability to take a walk, not strikeout, field a position, or run the bases.

Will the REAL Pujols please stand up? This guy is a Class A jerk and I hope people continue to remind him so he will either change his attitude or fall apart in the public’s eye. There are many factors that must be mentioned when talking about the 2006 season.

    - Cardinals (83-78) 1st in division * Phillies (85-77) 2nd division (Mets 97-65)
Way to go Albert, you made the playoffs that year because your division was pathetic. Congrats to Ryan for helping his team to a better record.

    - Phillies management decided to trade Bobby Abreu and Corey Lidle at the trade deadline that year. Did that possibly hinder the Phillies chances of a postseason run, Albert?

    - the meaning of MVP is always going to be interpreted in different ways by different people, but I think the “V” is getting forgotten here.
    * 2006 SALARY * [Pujols - $14,000,000 Howard - $355,000]

I know which “employee” my boss would have declared more VALUABLE to the “company” that year.

Don’t get me wrong, the 2008 NL MVP was Albert Pujols. He hit .398 in August, and had 104 walks and only 54 strikeouts ALL year.

I don’t like players that whine a whole bunch, especially those making absurd amounts of money. Since Pujols joined the Major Leagues, I have felt that he could be one of those great players that not just stacked up the stats, but also ages gracefully and grabs the heart of the nation. The jury is still out………

Mr Pujols has stuck his cleated foot in his mouth.

    Richie,

Isn’t the bigger question which 2 dumbass baseball writers gave votes to Derrek Lee? One 4th place vote, and one 6th place vote, are you kidding me?
