The fine folks over at Umpbump recently said that the Florida Marlins were one of the smartest teams in baseball (two championships in 15 years of existence kinda proves it – whatever reasoning there might be) … take some time and read Umpbump’s thoughts on the matter, and then come back here … (please come back here)

I agree with them – the Marlins are freaking brilliant – but for totally different reasons …

The Mermaids have their own LOGO?

Yep – The infamous Marlins Mermaids  – Since we started the MLB Cheerleader team profiles, everybody keeps saying …

  • When are you going to profile the Mermaids?
  • Hey – the Marlins have some cheerleaders
  • Have you seen the Mermaids? They’re freaking hawt! (That guy was from Southie I think)

Well, wait no further, because after the jump … are the Marlins Mermaids.

This is where we pretty much cross out the notion of calling these ladies “Team Ambassadors” and/or a “Promotions Squad.” Because that my friends – is a cheerleading/dance squad that drips of sexuality and the exploitation that we’ve come to expect from football and basketball. And Home Run Derby wonders why more MLB teams haven’t gone this far.

The Marlins describe the Mermaids as “the first dance/cheer team in Major League Baseball”… and the franchise takes (almost) as much pride in them as they do their two MLB Championships.

The Marlins put their dance squad up on their official website in a fully interactive display with bios, pics, and video profiles of every member of the squad.

And the Mermaids promote themselves pretty well too – via that scourge of the internet … Myspace.

Marlins Mermaids - Nice Shirts, ladiesWhat on Earth could those shirts possibly have said?

The Marlins Mermaids at the BeachI bet you can even find them on South Beach …

I’ve never been to Florida for a Marlins game, but I get the sense that between innings of Marlins games, mini-episodes of Sabado Gigante break out when the Mermaids hit the field.

The Mermaids can Dance

And since the Mermaids have been around a while (since 2003) and the Marlins actually promote them … people know about them. And go to events where they’re going to be.

And there’s some video out there. Crappy video, but moving pictures nonetheless …

The Marlins Mermaids cut to a commercialLet’s sum it up …

If the Marlins are playing well, watch the product on the field.

If the Marlins stink, watch the hotties dancing on the dugout
