Pictures from the Pedro Martinez Cockfight
Posted by: Richie Rich in Mets, Sick and WrongWell, they took the Pedro Martinez cockfight video down. One call to the Dominican works wonders I guess.
With all the National attention this is getting (AP, SI, ESPN, Howard Stern) … I’m a doofus for not downloading that video yesterday. Because now it’s gone.
UPDATE: The Video is back up …
For those of you wanting to see Pedro Martinez holding his coc- uhhh … rooster before it was brutally killed by Juan Marichal’s bird, here’s some stills from the video.
Pedro Martinez holding his rooster before the fight.
But wait … there’s more …
Pedro and Juan Marichal “introduce” their birds before the fight.
Martinez and Marichal watch their birds battle to the Death. And smile.
And the victorious Bird
I would like to thank the New York Post and Sports by Brooks and Deadspin for picking this story up after Home Run Derby found it.

In my opinion, this is a perfect reason why “America’s Game” needs to stay in America…the great game of baseball has been tarnished with the influx of players that are not American.
They can all go back home as far as I am concerned…ALL OF THEM>>>

GIVE IT A REST. IF THIS WAS LEGAL IN THE US, IT WOULDN’T BE A PROBLEM. BECAUSE WE MAY NOT APPROVE OF IT, DOESN’T MEAN OTHER COUNTRIES SHOULD NOT ALLOW THE THINGS THEY’VE BEEN DOING LONG BEFORE WE WERE EVER A COUNTRY. LIVE AND LET LIVE, WORRY ABOUT YOURSELF.

WHY IS IT OKAY FOR US TO PAY AND WATCH HUMANS FIGHT IN A RING BUT NOT STUPID ANIMALS?

Paul in Dallas, you un-educated fool. Just because it’s “America’s Game” doesn’t mean others born outside of the U.S can’t play. I have seen dirty, backward Rednecks from Texas eating roadkill on video. That doesn’t mean I won’t support a guy who’s a little bit country from being a great player.

As far as I know, we’re not forcing any humans to go and fight in a boxing ring. Except for the movie Gladiator, I don’t think that happens.
We’re not breeding the best fighters (aka survivors) to make new stocks of boxers or MMA fighters.
And the boxers and fighters are getting PAID cash money. When was the last time you saw a champion rooster wearing loads of bling with the Jenna Jameson of the poultry world on his wing?
February 7th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
What a stupid article, you go out your way to criticize the best pitcher in the mlb history (inning 4 inning) Pedro Martinez.
Rooster fights is legal in the dominican Republic so why should you have a problem?
The vice president in the united states goes hunting which is legal in this country but you have a problem with rooster fights??? In the United states its cool to shoot a poor deer in the head, but you have a problem with a rooster.
I hate to say this but I bet the onw who wrote this article is a white redneck who has someone in their family who goes hunting and who’s wife probably owns a fur coat ,, what a hipocrit

Great documentary on Cock Fighting at
http://www.spike.com/video/2439440
Paul in Dallas is what’s wrong with America.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
PS – The aforementioned documentary mentions that 1,000 + chickens are killed in Cock FIghts each year while over 1 billion are killed and served for dinner. We are talking about chickens here, not cats or dogs.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Why is this story garnering so much attention? Cockfighting is legal in the Dominican republic, just because it is illegal in America does not mean it is not in other places. There is no reason to impose our beliefs on other regions. Some people from other regions see hunting deer for sport as inhumane and dissaprove of it. But it is done here and legal. So let us all stop judging people based on American laws and standards. It is not the only country on the face of the earth
February 7th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Paul in Dallas, you give the name “Paul” a bad, um, name. You need a slap.
The same goes for Rich (not Richie Rich). Slap for you too.
Hunting and animal cruelty are not synonymous.
February 7th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
do these are chickens!!americans stuff their fat faces with billions of dead chcikens and you complain about a stupid cockfight!!!geez!
February 7th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
It’s legal in the country and part of their culture.
No different than humans pounding the bleep out of each other in the UFC (I support) except with out the death.
Who cares – leave them alone and mind your own damn business if it isn’t illegal. It’s part of the animal kingdom, except for it’s controled and wagered on by humans. Animals die everyday in the wild for territorial rights, just part of nature. People with simple minds just need to keep there mouth shut and worry about things that are more important.
Cruelty or not if you don’t like then don’t read about it or go to an event, you have the choice.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
People eat meat and how that meat is brought to our table is probably more cruel than male chickens battling it out. They’re fighters granite they don’t get paid and that’s even better yet, I would rather see two chickens fight for honor and respect than watch boxing any day of the week with a bunch of over paid arrogant thug criminals…..thank god for MMA. At least the many forms of martial arts teaches respect, honor, sportsmanship and dignity. I hope boxing fades away as sport in general for its ruined.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Well if this is so ok in their country, then why the heck was the video taken down? Maybe MLB is trying to protect their already badly tarnished image?
I dont approve of this, but then its not me or my country, so thats all I’ll say. no sense making a big issue out of it. If you don’t like what you see (or saw) go to another website.
February 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
How are hunting and cock-fighting not synonmous? Technically, they can be both be labeled “animal cruelty”. On the one hand, you throw blood thirsty roosters against each other and watch them fight it out and on the other, you have some “smart” human aiming their crosshairs at a innocent, unsuspecting animal for “sport”. What kind of freakin’ sport is “shooting an unsuspecting animal”?
February 7th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
You don’t know what synonymous means.
In any case, this digression is pointless. Only vegans can make the stance against cock fighting.
“They’re fighters granite they don’t get paid” Uhh, what the fuck are you talking about? Granted man. Not granite.
For somebody who despises simple minds, you would think such a pointed mistake would be evident.
Also, I completely agree with you, Bobby, that roosters battle for honor and respect. I think I have read studies by poultry biologists that proved roosters actually know what honor and respect are.
Because, you know, when they fight, it isn’t for survival.
If I were I would… nevermind

WHY IS FISHING ACCEPTABLE? WHY IS IT OK TO STICK A FISH WITH A HOOK AND THEN LET IT GO SO IT CAN SUFFER?…OPEN WOUND + SALT WATER= OUCH!!!…AT LEAST IN FIGHTING, THE ANIMAL SUFFERS MOMENTARILY AND THEN DIES WHERE AS A FISH DOES NOT DIE.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
why do you talk in all caps?
and that was a stupid point, the point is the fish doesn’t die
February 7th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
most of you are very stupid. here is a little analogy baseball:united states = cockfighting:dominican republic, this fight happened in an arena built for such a thing to call pedro country for it is ignorant and uninformed. and seriously paul in dallas some of the best baseball (or beisbol) players in history have been from places other than the united states you racist idiot. I forgot white people in sports do not ever do anything wrong.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
First of all!!
1) This sport is legal there.
2) what does this has to do with baseball?
3) He was not doing this here in usa.
so with this said folks. lets worry about the American ball players who are using steroids and cheating here in the u.s.
Lets worry about the hockey players who beat the crap out of each other while kids are present at games and nothing is done to them..
Get a life Folks!!!
February 7th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
pedro is a disgrace. he comes over here makes out money and goes back there and does something like this. lets put his ass in a ring and see him fight until his death. see how he would like it. what he did is just as bad as what michael vick did. he is no better. and he is a met. disgusting. kids look up to him and this is what he does by example. and marco yeah hockey players but they dont fight until death. and you comprehen that?? duh. like i said he is a disgrace.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Pedro has not disgraced anyone. He was participating in a sport that is part of his cultural heritage and is LEGAL in his country. Pedro does not have to explain himself or answer to anyone.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Someday someone will take issue with horse racing and we won’t have that anymore either. It happened in the Dominican Republic. Americans need to mind their own business. We don’t have to like it, but we need to understand (not agree) that other cultures are different from ours. Duh….
February 7th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Let’s say Pedro flies to a country where it’s legal to pay 14-year-old girls for sex. He’s caught on video. Would all you numbnuts still be saying “who cares, it’s legal there”? Do you people stand for anything at all? If you personally think that cockfighting is fine, say so. But don’t take the attitude of “hey what can we do, it’s not our country,” because that misses the point. This isn’t about changing the DR, this is about what Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal think is OK. Darting through a doorway in front of a woman instead of holding it for them isn’t illegal, but if I caught Pedro doing that, I’d think he’s an ass. YES BUT IT’S LEGAL IN THIS COUNTY you’d be saying. Yes but shut up.
And I like the comment about the UFC is just like cockfighting, “but without the death.” umm… EXACTLY.
And Homer, this cracked me up: “I think I have read studies by poultry biologists that proved roosters actually know what honor and respect are.” You *think*? You might have read the collected works of a group of Poultry Biologists, but you’re not sure? You remember the conclusions but not whether you actually read the studies? “Poultry biologists”? Really? S4it that’s funny.

February 7th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Excellent point, Fred. Thanks for enlightening us. I used to think that cockfighting might be a legitimate part of dominican culture, but once you mentioned the analogy to child molestation in “other countries” I just had to change my mind. Spectacular logic. For that matter, we should be up in arms about bullfighting in Spain, or 18 year olds drinking beer in England or, god forbid, those reckless speeders on the autobahn in Germany! What’s right for us ought to be right for everyone, no?
February 7th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Use whatever analogy you want, Joe. There are all sorts of things that are both illegal and generally unaccepted here — particularly in our “role models” — that are legal elsewhere in the world. Use whichever you want, then declare that anyone who travels there to indulge is exempt from criticism because Hey, it’s legal there. Have fun.
February 8th, 2008 at 12:58 am
“and you comprehen that??”
get it? HEN! baaahahaha
good one, bill
February 8th, 2008 at 2:47 am
This article is pointless……………We need to stop judging people based on our beliefs here. That is why America is hated so much now….never mind our own business

I use to like to watch spiders catch prey in their webs when I was a kid for enjoyment.
February 8th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Ummm Fred…it’s a goddamn chicken. Relax. Thousands are killed everyday and unless you don’t eat meat – and I mean any meat at all, then your agruement is, well for lack of a better word…retarded.
Your analogy comparing cock fighting to rape is at best stupid and maybe for some down right insulting. It’s about as meaninful as comparing Pepsi to Heroine.
Take a deep breath….calm down and remember, there is a lot more horrible shit happening in the world today than Pedro attending a cock fight.
February 8th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Joe – extremely well said Sir.
February 8th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
well well the hypocrasy continues in this country.
Take a look at ringling Bros and Barnum &Bailey circus. i bet all you fools have taken your children to see tigers and elephants balance a ball on their heads or stand on one foot. We have a problem in this country you want to be entertained by this cruelty that you know exists but refuse to acknowlege it and still take your kids to the circus.
Get real fools

cock fighting takes place every weekend in america its most common in every state and as long as this country flaots on the god damn oceon its gonna take place, no buts or maybes ITS GONNA HAPPEN, it was an american tradition, george washington, abe lincoln, they all were fluent cock fighters,

The problem is that we (U.S.) tries too many times to impose our beliefs on others outside of our borders. I’m sure that most athletes born outside of the US.A never partake on their own countries history or traditions! what about our good ole boys from this country that visit VEGAS? Does anyone here Think that their not conducting business outside of MLB’s standard of ethics? What’s legal there is illeagal in other states. How many athletes drive their Lambo’s on our highways at ridiculous speeds endangering Joe Public! Is this overhyped because of Vick? Too many times we look to tarnish someone else’s career because of a need for publicity! Look at the steroid investigation, from baseball players to musicians?! Let’s get real and worry about true issues here at home and not abroad..
February 9th, 2008 at 1:54 am
I am a vegan. This is not about imposing beliefs on someone else. Humans chose to fight, the animals do not. Whether it’s legal or not, it’s cruel just as a lot of other stuff done to animals is. A person can eat meat and still have some standards for what is humane and what isn’t.
And yes I am just as outraged about cruelty to people just as much as animals. There’s no good reason to harm another being unless it’s in self defense. It’s true animals kill to eat but for the most part they only kill for what they need to survive. There’s an order to it all, one that humans lack. Most of my friends and family are meat eaters and I love them just the same.
Someone commented by writing live and let live…try applying that to animals as well.
February 9th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
TomM – Where did I mention rape? You need to read before you write.

No, we’re just trying to impose our sense of right and wrong on people who get really really rich on our entertainment dollars. No one is saying that the DR should ban cockfighting; people just want Pedro and Juan to not partake in it.
And you’re absolutely right. If Pedro got recorded banging some woman in a Nevada whorehouse, you can bet that it would be a PR headache for baseball, and MLB wouldn’t issue a statement that it was A-OK with them just because it was legal in that particular county.
