What do pitchers Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal have in common?

  • Both are/were starting pitchers.
  • Both are from the Dominican Republic
  • Both are considered among the best Latino pitchers of all time
  • Both led the MLB in ERA: Marichal 2.10 - 1969; Martinez - 1999, 2000, 2002-3
  • Both led their league in wins: Marichal 24 - 1968; Martinez 23 - 1999
  • Both have 2,000 strikeouts: Marichal 2,303; Martinez 3,030
  • Both have 200 wins: Marichal 243; Martinez 209
  • Both are likely Hall of Famers (Marichal’s already in the HoF)
  • Both fight roosters in their native Dominican Republic

Wait - what was that last one?  That’s right.  Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal are cockfighters.

Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal are Cockfighters

Cock Fighting … in my opinion is a barbaric sport just as much as dogfighting is a barbaric sport.  Right Mr. Vick?  Right Little Jerry?

The practice is often legal (if not celebrated) in many countries like the Dominican Republic - but that doesn’t make it right.

For years, people have bred roosters to be aggressive - beyond their natural tendency to fight to establish a dominant pecking order.  In these fights, the birds often fight to the death merely for sport and gambling opportunities.  Occasionally, sharpened metal spurs are attached to the birds’ talons.  Louisiana will be the last state to ban cockfighting (in August 2008) in the United States.

If you’re squeamish or simply not interested in seeing Marichal and Martinez shake hands in a Dominican cockfighting ring before their roosters fight to the death … I suggest you don’t play the attached video.

That’s right … we’ve got video.

Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal are CockfightersIf you didn’t watch the video after the greeting in the ring and the posing with the birds, Pedro Martinez’ rooster looks to have been beaten by Juan Marichal’s bird.  Or the other way around.  I couldn’t tell.

All while Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal smile ringside while two creatures try to kill each other.

We here at Home Run Derby despise animal abuse in all its forms (except deep frying chickens and serving them in a bucket).

UPDATE (2/7/08 11AM):  Unfortunately, I did not download the vid before it was taken down.  Hmmm.  Why would that be taken down?  Someone make a long-distance call to the DR or something?

Anyway … I have some stills from the fight posted right here.

BallHype: hype it up!

    I’m proud of you fellas.

    You kept your head
    on a swivel.

That’s what you gotta do when
    you’re in a vicious cockfight.

    Can you believe Mantooth and
    the Evening News Team?

  2. jeff needham says:

i really don’t mean to be insensitive. cockfighting does not seem practical in any way i agree. however, in the scheme of life is it really so unforgiving, given the cultural and socioeconomic standards of where you are from. ie, in LA, it is still legal. and that is NOTHING against LA. Things change/develop/evolve/”become right” at different and odd rates.

    i admit i couldn’t watch your video b/c it wouldn’t load. also, i’m very biased b/c i’m a huge pedro fan.

  3. Brad says:

If they didn’t break any laws and it’s legal (and common) down there, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

  4. crazyhomie says:

i don’t know about ya’ll i like cock. That means I love to see 2 cocks fight. I fight cock all the time. i also take cock.

  5. Herman A GUSA says:

Game cocks live longer then the ideal chicken. They also have history on each bird like a family tree which most families don’t have or even know of. They see a VET for to test for medical problems. They live in a controled area just like you do, but their master waters and feeds them daily and the eat better then the ideal chicken you eat. Nobody says anything about the boxing around the world, look at ALI. Not to much talk about the cats and dogs eaten around the world and even in our USA. More people are hurt or even killed at a soccer game the at any Cock fight. Look at bull ridding. How would like some one to tie your nuts and make you go. Or even cut the off to make you bigger so people can eat. We use to have lots of farmers with chickens. And yes we cut the out to. A good Rooster lives with approx 10 hens (he becomes a breeder) or stud. Around here the studs just pass on HIV. Leave the old sport alone it polices it self. Thanks for your tiime.

  6. SillyBilly says:

I wonder if Brian McNamee also injected Pedro in the ass….then the 2 of them started a little cock fight of their own….maybe McNamee saved the used condom from their ass injecting and cock fighting….boy Pedro would be “Pith off”.
“Mirda - cockfighting in my country legal” That must’ve been where he learned his technique to kick Zimmer’s ass.

  7. Carlos says:

The difference between Vick and Pedro is that Pedro did not break the law! Are you trying to be like Bush now, going into other countries and forcing your customs or morality on them? Come on, let’s use some common sense now can’t we?

  8. Rick says:

I personally don’t like any sort of animal fighting, but I’m not going to decry Pedro or Juan for doing something totally legal and accepted in their homeland. As Juan said in his book, he grew up around it, and since he hasn’t done it in America where it is outlawed, I fail to see the problem caused by this. Kids can drink at 18 in Mexico. I don’t see you decrying high school athletes who go to Mexico on Spring Training and drink.

  9. Matt says:

Didn’t break the law?!? What an incredibly stupid argument, which unfortunately has routinely been used by people to commit acts of cruelty and atrocity, thought out history. Amazing people haven’t evolved past there on selfishness to simply see this “sport” for what it is, cruel. There is no excuse for this sick behavior.

  10. Richie Rich says:

    Thank You Matt.

Just because something is legal doesn’t make it right.

And pitting two animals against each other for no reason except your own sick and twisted enjoyment is just sick and wrong.

  11. bigdogdaddy says:

Are you trying to be like Bush now, going into other countries and forcing your customs or morality on them? Come on, let’s use some common sense now can’t we?

WTF are you talking about? Where is the US forcing ‘it’s morality’ on anyone? Oh you mean destroying totalitarian gulags? That’s not morality and either is anumal fighting.

[...] More from the weird world of baseball: NY Mets ace Pedro Martinez is a cockfighter. With video!  Vs. Hall-of-Famer Juan Marichal, no less! In the Dominican Republic, cockfighting [...]

  13. Rick says:

Who made it our job to say what is right or wrong? I’m glad you feel you can cast stones because you’ve done nothing wrong in your life. Good for you. I should probably bow down to you then, because you are clearly better than all of us.

  14. luis says:

Im dominican and cockfighitng is very popoular and respectable there. This is not like vick who fought dogs. Dogs are mans best friend, when you think of a dog you think of a pet or service dogs. When you think of a chicken you think of KFC and fried eggs. BIG DIFFERANCE!! There is absolutely nothing worng with cockfighting especially if you do it in your country where its legal.

Learn to have some damn respect for cultures differant than yours!

  15. AbsoluteMorality says:

Be careful when trying to deal with absolute morality. There are plenty of things legal and accepted here that would get you sent to jail in other countries, or worse.

  16. dubya says:

If KFC can stay in business what is the big deal?

  17. Lenny says:

    To All:

    1. We opposers of this brutal, so-called sport never said it was illegal in the Dominican Republic. Therefore, that’s not the issue and not part of the debate.

    2. Martinez and Marichal are hardly role models to the youth of the world in their involvement in this cruelty to animals.

    3. Doctors say of youth who engage in such cruelty to animals: There’s something psychologically wrong with them and such youth often become some of the most deviant, sadistic criminals and murderers in later life. Logically, aspects of said diagnosis would apply to adults who do the same thing.

    4. I posit something is aberrant in grown men, millionaires, looked upon as heroes and role models, but get their kicks and enjoy seeing animals fight to the death and in the process maim each other.

    5. “If,” you factor in religion and “if” Martinez and Marichal are religious and or church goers (and their supporters), one must ask them and their supporters how they justify this barbaric, sadistic, cruel treatment of one of God’s creatures?

    Lenny

  18. Bobby284 says:

Anybody been to mexico and see a bull fight? that was the saddest thing I ever saw but it is a part of their culture and I experienced it with an open mind. People hunt for sport we watch that. People fish for sport and we enjoy that. We watch NASCAR for the wrecks, We Watch boxing with two men or women fighting in the ring until one gets knocked out. and some have died from it not including the long lasting effects it has on the fighter. We are such hypocrits in this country. Who cares if pedro released a rooster into a ring. it wasnt even his rooster. he was a guest “announcer”. If it was pedros he would have won. So he watched it who cares. This is not real news. If you compare this to vick its like comparing apples to oranges. Vick knowingly broke a US LAW where he resides. He pitted 2 dogs against each other. Dogs in this country are seen as pets friends and severs for our law enforcement and blind. Serve as security for our home. Roosters are good for ???? you’ll have to ask perdue or Colonel Sanders. The name is GAMECOCK. Get over it. Or r all u cry babies vegetarians

  19. SBKNLS says:

this is in response for Richie Rich, what about you guys that go out every weekend kill deers and shoot down birds just for the hell of it. I quess thats not cruelty

  20. Richie Rich says:

    SBKNLS -

If someone’s shooting something for the hell of it … there’s something wrong with that person. And it is cruelty.

I disagree with hunting for sport. If you’re not going to eat it, you shouldn’t be killing it. Now, if you’re going to take that deer and make venison out of it … that’s a different story.

I’m not a hunter. I have a half-brother and cousins who do. I’ve been invited. Never done it and I’m not interested in doing it. I’ve fired a rifle and shot a bow and arrow.

But I’ve never aimed at anything that breathes. Only circle targets.

Everyone needs to send this email below to :

    fanfeedback@mets.mlb.com

After learning of and viewing the recent cockfighting that Pedro Martinez participated in, I am calling for an immediate suspension of Pedro Martinez. His suspension should mirror that of Michael Vick due to his acts being just as despicable. Professional athletes are role models for children all over the world and paid and rewarded for their work. They should also be responsible for their actions of the field. By ignoring this, you would indeed aid in the harming of countless animals all over the world.

I appreciate your assistance in this matter! Pedro needs to be suspended!

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

  22. Indiana Jones says:

The do-gooders in the United States are at it again trying to impose values and morality in another country. If anything, the so-called moral majority have screwed many fellow Americans by trying to legislate morality — in this case cockfighting. I think it is time to revisit the animal cruelty laws in the state and federal level because they are so radical and exreme compared to the rest of the world.

  23. J Heavy says:

Hey Richie Rich, If you have ever ate 1 piece of chicken in your life then shut-up about it alright and quit worrying about it. People need to start focusing on REAL problems. Abortion,drug-abuse and such happens everyday to me that is more important, not pedro turning loose a rooster that had a cousin that was eaten for food–hell at least he had a fighting chance. Until you see how and What’s behind gamefowl and know the facts then quit prematuraly judging.

  24. Eric says:

    Listen folks,

This is a cultural issue in many other countries with much there is history, custom, and practice surrounding the sport of cockfighting.

Leave the two gentleman alone, they are only following their customs.

I am an American in Mexico, where I became a Cockfighter. Guess what happened. I am not longer the Gringo in a Foreign Land. I am fully accepted and even revered in the Local Community. My wife (Mexicana) and I regularly attend Fiestas (County Fairs.), what is the key feature, yes, a cockfight. Se in many other Counties Cockfighting is is a Normal as Aple Pie.

In Mexico, this is a family event with the entire household attending, Husband, wife children etc. So folks, make the rules that you want in the Good Ol U.S.A. and leave the rest of the world alone.

Man did not make the nature of the Rooster to fight all that come his way !

God did or for the Athiests out there , Ol Mother Nature !

    Saludos,

  25. Tony Sacramento says:

How sad when people like Herman A GUSA above, justifies extreme pain and suffering of one animal with worse suffering to make it ALL OK.
Hey, if you get a boo-boo on your finger you know it hurts.
Animals hurt, animals feel pain, so get real and admit some of you are sadists.
    What else could it be?

  26. Max says:

As if anybody really cared. Next thing you know, Randy Johnson is caught attending a bullfight in Spain.

    Hype.

  27. Jimmy says:

Cows and chicken are not animals, McDonald and KFC “create” their own food from just vegetables…

  28. Roe says:

Cockfighting is pretty barbaric… like dogfighting, bullfighting, and whatever else where animals are made to fight for the entertainment of people.

Any culture that still holds onto those traditions shows how much less evolved they are from those that don’t torture animals. People who don’t understand that just aren’t very smart. It’s not about legality.

The same reason why it would be wrong to to drop kick a baby or sucka punch an old person is the same reason why cockfighting is reprehensible.

  29. Rick says:

To everyone who thinks that cock fighting is torturous and is feeling Righteous. Look at how Tyson Farms or Purdue treats its chickens. They cut of their beaks to make them more docile. Instead of being able to free range, they are forced to stay in pens by the hundreds with no room to move. Their days are cut from 24 hours to 20 hours (10 hours day, 10 hours night) so that they mature faster. They live miserable a exsistence. Write letters to the Mets though. Then write them to the grocery stores who carry the Purdue or Tyson Chicken’s you eat for dinner. And the farms that they live on.

People have different cultures, and who hell do you think you are to impose your biblical “I’m right you’re wrong” attitude. Who are you to say these people are less evolved. Speaking as an American, this is why people in other countries hate us. Because ignorant ass people judging other cultures based on their lives.

  30. Herman A GUSA says:

Hey #25 Tony Sacramento. It is Legal in their homeland. boo-boo don’t make my finger hurt. But they use animals to find treatments to make your boo-boo feel better. I am an animal and felt the pain an suffering. I don’t claim to be a sadist. What else could it be? I am just a MARINE. If we keep taken all the rights, you will wish ALI hit you with a left. Bad to the Bone. Have a nice day.

  32. Byron says:

cockfighting is a brilliant sport, DONT judge it beefore youve seen it or attended one, Cockfights happen every weekend in america and WILL always happen, its a sport, and a great one at that!, george washington, abe lincoln, they all fought roosters for sport, its an american tradition, but todays americans are soo damn up tight they seem to act like there better than others, and in all actuality cockfighting was once the greatest sport in there own damn country,,,

PROUD to be an american cocker!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Bret the Jet says:

The rooster fights are not illegal in South America, Venezuela, Dominican Colombia are part of our culture and we demand that we respect our way of life and believe that Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal does not have to make any apology to anyone in the USA because they do not violated any law ocupense of pollution you produce that destroying our planet and the sale of drugs in their pharmacies this destroying their society. RESPETEN …

  38. JASON FOSTER says:

The first cock fight I attended was in PANAMA while serving our beloved country. I had a blast and many of you are right it is a sport and a sport with a long long history, especially in United States. Do not pass judgement on others unless one wants to be judged. I think the tree huggers of the world need to find something better to do with their time. Go tree the dog fighters and leave the COCKFIGHTERS alone.

  39. Nick the Greek says:

    Jason,

[...] Wednesday, our friends at Home Run Derby found a video that allegedly showed Pedro Martinez and Hall Of Famer Juan Marichal participating at a cockfight [...]

  41. Pena says:

I dont see a problem with cock fighting. Its just a part of history, all these people that say they are against cock fighting need to see what these animals do in the wild. Certain Breeds of these birds were just made to fight.
Also i think the Humane Society and organizations like PETA are ruining america. They made cock fighting illegal in many states, How long before hunting is illegal, then it will eventually get to the point where it will be illegal to have a animal in a cage.
i think there are alot bigger problems to deal with besides worrying about a bunch of birds fighting. Why doesnt the gov. stop wasting its time chasing cockers, and try to solve some murders, or try to find a way to stop the war. People are dyeing overseas to protect are freedoms, but organizations such as PETA are trying to take them away.
C’mon, the people in those organizations would watch a person die rather than an animal, and if you ask me i think they may have alot of free time on their hippie hands if they have nothing better to do than bitch about birds fighting. Alot of cockfights are just as humane as slaughtering companies are. If we continue to let organizations like PETA run america it will be illegal to consume meat, and all of america will be vegan.
FUCK PETA, IM GOING TO MEXICO

  42. yes says:

all you pussys who cant watch somthing die can go live in france
oh wait…….. i think the french have bigger balls than those people….hahaha
    i agree wit pena

  44. Eric says:

i think its a little much, condemning people who are just participating in something that is a custom in their own country. I recently photographed a cockfight in Bali, Indonesia (you can see the photographs at http://www.ericisaac.com/balicockfight/ ) and while I find it disgusting, it was definitely something I can respect as a part of their culture. In that way I found it very beautiful.

  45. Jobu says:

    Eric -

So if something is legal or part of a country’s heritage, it’s okay?
So foreign countries in which slavery is legal and has been for centuries, makes slavery okay right?

    It doesn’t work that way.

  46. Nick the Greek says:

I love that this thread still gets comments 5 months after it was posted. and Jobu is right, tradition doesn’t make it right.
