With the money they saved on Johan Santana, the Twins bought a Super Bowl Ad
Posted by: Richie Rich in Ballparks, Baseball Business, Commercials, TwinsSo the Minnesota Twins didn’t keep Johan Santana. Instead, they traded him to the Mets for prospects and thereby didn’t have to pay him anything near the $137.5 million that the Mets guaranteed Santana.
So with all that money saved, what’s a Baseball Team to do?
- Go get the next best available (but slightly cheaper) free agent pitcher?
- Get new, more comfortable uniforms?
- Lower ticket prices?
Naaahhh.
If you’re the Minnesota Twins … you go and get a commercial during the Super Bowl … let’s watch …
That was aired on local Minnesota television during the Super Bowl yesterday. It’s pretty cool, especially for those of us who can’t wait for Spring Training to start.
That’s Michael Cuddyer, Joe Mauer, and the newly extended Justin Morneau playing in the sandlot which will become the Twins’ new ballpark in 2010. I can’t wait to post another Stadium Demolition video at HRD.
Local advertising during the Super Bowl usually runs around $30,000 for a spot. The Twins could have bought nearly 4,600 ads at that rate with the amount the Mets have guaranteed Santana.
Let’s see … $137.5 million minus four minor league salaries minus $30,000 plus new stadium revenues in two years ….
Somewhere, Twins’ owner Carl Pohlad is smiling as he sits upon his ever-growing pile of money.
Hat tip to my brother-in-law up in Minnesota.

Seriously, I rewound this like 50 times.
Fricking awesome - and yes, it gets me SUPER FIRED UP! … and takes a bit of the heat off of Smith and St. Peter for now.

I like the sound the ball makes when it clocks the statue. In my mind, I like to think that was the one real ball they threw to get the shot.
Also, nice that it’s a Tribe fan that gets his window smashed. No question who the Twins see as the frontrunners this year, I guess.

Apparently the Tom Kelly scene was done in one take. I wonder if it was because it was so good, or because he said “$%^ you, I’m not doing it again.”
