Joe Buck is a Protocol DroidReaders of this crappy little baseball website know that I’m not a big fan of Joe Buck.  When he calls a game (football or baseball) there’s something lacking.  Namely, fun.  When he calls a game, he’s a monotonous droid.

Mind you, my wife loves it when he’s calling the game … because I’m 99.5% likely to mute the TV.  That’s the reason I tell myself, anyway.

What’s even more annoying is that Buck is often hilarious outside of the FOX Sports booth.

  • Bud Light Commercials.  ”Dude”
  • Conan O’Brien and “Jub-Jub
  • His interviews for Bud.TV
  • The 2008 Super Bowl commercial for Pepsi Max

Where the heck is that during the game?  Sure … he did say “Jub-Jub” during Game One of the World Series, but it was a throw-away, if you ask me.

Let’s add more fuel to the fire … back during the LCS, Buck appeared on ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption.  He and Tim McCarver were asked about the delay between the end of the NLCS and the World Series … and Buck was hilarious.  Let’s watch.

Argh.  Where is that during the game?  The Man’s a freaking protocol droid during a telecast.

He’s got a great voice.  But he doesn’t use it like he could.  Nick the Greek pointed out a while back that Scott Podsednik’s walk-off Home Run in Game 2 of the 2005 World Series was dampened by the fact that Buck called it as though it were any other Home Run.  That was one off the most unlikely shots in World Series History … and Buck wrote it off with a call that was truly forgettable.

Dude …

Especially check out this interview between Buck and Paul Rudd for Bud TV.

It is tough being funny when working baseball with Tim McSelf-Promotion.

For football games it is like Buck is star struck about being in the booth with Aikman - either that or he is unsure when the concussions will start having an adverse effect on Troy-Boy.

I have to say that with as many reporters, broadcasters, and public figures that get nailed by PC crybabies, it’s gotta be hard to try to improv during a game for fear that if you don’t just stick to the script, you may say something that seems harmless at the time but will come back to bite you.

By simply broadcasting exactly what is happening on the field and not adding any flare or color to it, he is reducing the risk that he may offend someone, as ridiculous as that sounds considering it’s sports we’re talking about, but none the less, this is the world in which we live.

I think he’s just playing it safe. In the career he is in, I also think it’s a wise choice.
