2008 Royals and Blue Jays alternate uniformsIn 2008, the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals are going to do something that no baseball team has done since 1991.

They’re going to break out the Powder Blue Uniforms. Mind you - they’ll be only occasionally be used as home alternate uniforms, but that’s a feat in and of itself. I don’t think anyone’s ever worn the powder blue in their home stadium before.

The Royals will be wearing blue shirts (with white pants) while the Blue Jays will go completely retro and bust out the baby blue from head to toe. The Jays will also bring back their old logo, a pullover jersey, and their old two-color cap. I have one of those hats. I love it.

There’s no word yet as to how often the Royals and Jays will do this in 2008, but the vibe is that they’ll do it enough that they petitioned MLB to add the uniforms to their regular cache of kits.

The St. Louis Cardinals have worn powder blue throwbacks in road games twice (2005 vs Tampa Bay and 2007 vs Milwaukee).

Considering that we’ve hardly seen powder blue for the last sixteen seasons (and the fact that no one under the age of 21 likely has any memory of powder blue baseball) let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the teams that dared … to wear blue.

Prepare yourselves for a trip when the blue wasn’t just in the azure sky over the field. And watch out for lots of polyester pullovers and stirrups.

Chicago Cubs (1941-42, 1978-81)

Chicago Cubs 1942 Road UniformsThe Cubs were the first team to wear road blues - way back in the early 1940’s. Isn’t it fitting that a team from Chicago (home of the Blues) would be the first to wear blue?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any photographs of the blue vests, so the online awesomeness that is the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Dressed to the Nines exhibit will have to do.

And they did it twice.

Dave Kingman - Chicago CubsMike Krukow - Chicago Cubs

Not as nice the second time around, as they wore pinstriped blue kits in the late 70’s. Those are some hideous pajamas.

Brooklyn Dodgers (1944)

With the advent of night baseball, the Dodgers tried a Baby Blue satin uniform. My guess is that the satin was supposed to reflect the lights and blind the opposing team or something.

Brooklyn Dodgers 1944 Blue Satin Uniform

That’s Leo Durocher’s jersey and some other guy’s pants. The combo sold at auction for $15,692 in 2006. That’s a lot, until you consider they were probably designed by Hef.

Chicago White Sox (1964-68, 1971-75)

For years, the White Sox seemingly had new uniforms and colors every other year. So it stands to reason that they would catch the powder blue bug. They did. Twice.

Dick Allen - White Sox

The first go-round in the 1960’s was unmemorable, but the Sox’ blue/red combo in the 1970’s was pretty cool. It’s one of the few powder blue/red combos that don’t make me want to hurl.

Seattle Pilots (1969) / Milwaukee Brewers (1970-1984)

The expansion Pilots were only around for one season in Seattle, but they did it in blue. With yellow trim - which isn’t that bad.

Right before the 1970 season, the Pilots packed up for Milwaukee under the guidance of used car salesman Bud Selig, who kept the robin-egg blue uniforms and slapped “Milwaukee” on them - and kept the blue until 1984.

Seattle Pilots - John DonaldsonMilwaukee Brewers - Robin Yount

Hey Robin - wear those pants a little tighter.

Montreal Expos (1969-91)

Twenty-three years. The Expos wore their blue road unis for 23 years - longer than any other club.

Montreal Expos - Bill GullicksonMontreal Expos - Andre Dawson

Some might have called the Expos’ outfits as brutal eyesores (and they were - the red clashes horribly with the blues), but when the Expos dropped the blue in ‘92 and went with those gray kits, it was a sad day for baseball.

Philadelphia Phillies (1973-88)

Hall of Famers Steve Carlton and Mike Schmidt wore the blue in Philly. Accented with maroon. Again, I don’t like the red/powder combo.

Steve CarltonMike Schmidt

Minnesota Twins (1973-86)

The Twins were color-blind as well, combining the powder blue with red trim that just didn’t work. Even with dark navy accents this is hideous.

Bert Blyleven - Minnesota TwinsKirby Puckett - Minnesota Twins

Kansas City Royals (1973-91)

Whereas a lot of other teams’ blue uniforms were eyesores, the Royals powder blue uni’s were accented with royal blue and white.

George Brett - Kansas City RoyalsBret Saberhagen - Kansas City Royals

And they worked. This is the standard for powder blue uniforms.

And it always will be.

St. Louis Cardinals (1976-84)

I don’t mind these St Louis unis. Until you see that hideous waistband.

Why the Cardinals don’t break out completely red uniforms is beyond me. Whoever heard of a blue cardinal?

Ozzie Smith - St Louis Cardinals

Texas Rangers (1976-82)

Someone will have to explain why the Rangers went blue. You don’t see many henley shirts as baseball uniforms.

Bert Blyleven - Texas RangersBump Willis - Texas Rangers

Seattle Mariners (1977-84)

When Seattle got a second expansion team (to replace the Pilots) they went right back to the color scheme that the Pilots took with them to Milwaukee.

Only this time it was polyester instead of wool. And way more seventies.

Julio Cruz - Seattle MarinersTom Paciorek - Seattle Mariners

Toronto Blue Jays (1977-88)

Much like the Royals uniforms, the Blue Jays’ old blues don’t look so bad. Less classic than the Royals, but at least there’s no red trim to clash with the powder blue.

Dave Stieb - Toronto Blue JaysBob Bailor - Toronto Blue Jays

Blue Jays logoThey’re near perfect.

And that logo and unique font still kick ass.

It’s still way better than that slate gray that the Jays (they’re hardly Blue anymore) wear on the road now.

Atlanta Braves (1980-86)

For a few years, the Braves had basically the same color scheme as the Royals. But these Atlanta uniforms are eyesores. Maybe it’s the two-tone script “Atlanta.”

Bob Horner - Atlanta BravesGene Garber - Atlanta Braves

Personally, I can’t wait to see the Royals and Blue Jays wear the powder blues again.

I found my old Expos and Jays stuff from the early 90s… ahh those were the good times…

  2. pico says:

Seriously, man, those ‘Spos outfits were really cool. The red white and blue M? The hats? The stripe? And the lettering of the numbers and the “Expos?” It’s different but it is COOL.

  5. Brian says:

Love it, especially considering I used to have a pair of baby blue cords back in the day.

My fave of course is always the satin jerseys, all the basketball teams in the 50’s sported satin warm up suits, they too were unbelievable.

    Great stuff, thanks.

I stand by what I said - the powder blue clashes with the red. But I also said it was a sad day for baseball when they went gray.

The Nationals should wear them every once in a while.

  7. Big_Mase says:

Actually, the Cardinals wore powder blue throwbacks last year for at least one game.

  8. twoeightnine says:

The only way those Blue Jays uniforms could get better is if they brought back the elastic waist.

  9. Richie Rich says:

    Big Mase -

You’re right. The Cards wore the blue throwbacks in 2005 in Tampa and then in 2007 at Milwaukee (25th anniversary of the 1982 World Series)

But the uniforms were never a part of their regular rotation. These blues are supposed to be just that.

  10. greg says:

Interesting read, but respectfully disagree. The Red and Blue look absolutely fantastic.

The Phillies is my personal favorite in the modern era and among the sharpest looking the past few decades. Guess its all personal taste/preference.

Back in the day I always thought the Phillies road unis were perfect, and that their home ones were bland.

  11. Kris says:

I think the Phillies messed up by not making their new alternate unis powder blue as well. I grew up with the baby blues, and I think they were great. Seeing Schmitty and Carlton in them brings back great memories.

  12. Eric Hz says:

I think I have every one of those baseball cards but the Blyleven one.

    Awesome article.

  13. Hank says:

Awesome article. I couldn’t agree more with the K.C. Royal blue.

    Everything else is second rate.

  14. William says:

I agree about the Royals powder blue being the gold (or blue) standard, but I also really like the Phillies’. Aside from the classic uniforms of teams like the Yankees and Dodgers, those are my two favorites.

  15. Will says:

    love the old expos

  16. DaveC says:

I agree with Greg that the Phils’ maroon/PB combo is great. I’m not a fan of the “regular” red/blue combo, but there’s something about the darker red that makes it work with the PB.

And now that the old Jays cap is “official” again, I wonder if it will become more widely available. I lost my old one with the vinyl netting in the back years ago…

  17. Richie Rich says:

    DaveC

I think they’d have to add the old cap back to the current catalog.

I have one from the mid-80’s. Fitted. The white panels in the front are almost yellow.

  18. Todd says:

Not only were Kansas City’s powder blue’s the “cat’s meow” back in the day, but I think they’ll be tops again. By pairing the new jersey with white pants, the Royals have struck a nice balance between old and new school, which should work well for them. Besides, since they haven’t undergone drastic design changes (see Toronto Blue Jays), the transition back to the baby blues is much smoother. I can’t wait to see them — the unveiling is tonight in Kansas City.

  19. Greg Pryor says:

I was with the Royals from ‘82 to ‘86 and loved the blues.
I am very happy to hear that they are bringing them back.
I do not understand why they will only wear the tops and not the bottoms.

  20. Jason says:

As a Royals fan, I LOVE that we are FINALLY bringing back the Powder Blues Baby!!!!

We have been BEGGING the organization to do this for years in KC, and I’m glad we are doing it as a leader (along w/ the Jays) rather than a follower, cause I guarantee the Twins, Cards, Mariners, et all will incorporate some sort of Powder Blue in the near future.

I agree w/ Mr. Pryor (heck of a player by the way) that they should go all the way & wear the pants too.

  21. Paul says:

I’m a huge Twins fan, and proud owner of a Rod Carew powder blue throwback jersey. I really hope that this trend catches on, and my twins bring back the baby blue.

[...] Home Run Derby has a great post on the road “blues” that teams used wear back in the 70’s. 23. Kelley says:

I thought it was Great for the Royals to bring back the powder blue! It is one of the most recognizable uniforms ever.

Especially shots of good ole #5 George Brett wearing it.
I would like to see ‘em do Jerseys and pants too, Greg.

    Go Royals!!

This is good stuff right here. I am from St. Louis, and loved the old powder blue jerseys…. except for that waistband like mentioned before lol. I run a traveling tournament softball team, we are called the River City Redbirds and we wear powder blue as one of our uniforms. We have white pants, red pants, and powder blue pants, and 3 jersey tops of same color. We mix and match them and sometimes wear them all together. My favorite set is the blue pants and blue top. Here are pics:

  27. Brandon says:

Call me dumb but I just don’t know why so many teams went blue in the 70s-80s. Powder Blue even. I mean I liked it but it just a weird concept to me as a kid in the 80s and an adult now.

  28. Russell says:

It would be cool if the Rangers would have powder blue road uniforms with TEXAS written out in red in a contemporary way.

  29. Pit says:

I’m a sucker for the powder blues … all those teams should bring them back.

The White Sox powder blues are my favorite (I think) but they all look sooooooooo good.

I think that it’s funny that you say the Twins power-blue unis don’t work but you don’t mind the powder-blue from the Cardinals. Aren’t they the same thing?

  34. Richie Rich says:

    Rendolonoium -

    Guilty as charged.
