MLB Mascot Brackets - Stomper vs D. Baxter the Bobcat
Posted by: Richie Rich in Athletics, Diamondbacks, Mascot Brackets, MascotsThe Mascot brackets continue with a matchup of one of the best … and one of the worst. From the Mammal Division …
#2 Stomper (Oakland A’s) vs. #7 D. Baxter the Bobcat (Arizona Diamondbacks)
After a competing ballclub’s manager labeled the 1901 Philadelphia Athletics a bunch of “White Elephants” … the team did what you have to do in that situation. Make your mascot an elephant.
Over a century later, the A’s mascot Stomper is among the elite mascots in all of sports, and might be baseball’s biggest party animal. I think the ladies like him too. Probably something about a big trunk.
Stomper would probably win a mascot Dance Dance Revolution contest. There’s plenty of videos out there of Stomper throwin’ down dance moves either with or against hip-hop dancin’ fans. But his recent Beat-Box skills make the video cut here …
D. Baxter the Bobcat? What? Aren’t they the diamondbacks?
The Diamondbacks waited two years after they started playing baseball to unveil their mascot in 2000. They should have waited longer, because it’s very possible that the lamest mascot in all mascotdom is a wildcat. It’s unimaginative and lame. Especially when your actual mascot is a deadly rattlesnake.
Think how cool that mascot would be. And the jokes I could have made about it. Instead they have another cat in Arizona alongside the University of Arizona’s Wilbur the Wildcat.
Rumor has it that the son of Jay Bell (the D-Backs’ 2B) thought it would be cool if the mascot was a bob cat because the D-Backs played at the BOB, short for Bank One Ballpark. Fast forward to a corporate buyout of Bank One by Chase Manhattan … and the mascot is even stupider.
Who is the better Mascot - Stomper or D. Baxter ?
- Stomper (Oakland A’s) (85%)
- D. Baxter (Arizona Diamondbacks) (15%)

I had a bad experience with D. Baxter earlier this year when he was at Rogers Centre in Toronto for one of Ace’s mascot manias.. I gave him a high-five and it did not feel great at all, feeling like I was high fiving something really rough or something like he wasn’t wearing anything on his hands at all.
He’s also extremely ugly, and he doesn’t even have a tail either! Who made this abomination? This is not a mascot I’d want at a party, much less even a ballgame!
We have junior hockey(OHL) mascots that look better than he does, created by great professionals who actually know how to make mascot costumes!

I agree I have season tickets to the Diamondbacks and when that lame mascot comes out we Boo him, my kids do too. He does nothing except jump in front for a camera shot, throw t-shirts and that’s about it. He also stays in one are and doesn’t go around the stadium like most mascots do. To put it nicely HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
