It’s a feathery battle of two 2nd to last place team mascots!

#1 The Parrot (Pittsburgh Pirates) vs. #8 Screech (Washington Nationals)

As far as I know, there are no parrots native to Southwestern Pennsylvania. However, there are Pirates. Pittsburgh Pirates. And where there are Pirates, there are Parrots.

Or at least that’s the logic the ballclub used when they came up with their mascot.

I like to point out the scrapes mascots get into, but no MLB Mascot has ever run “afowl” of the law as much as the Parrot. And that’s primarily for one incident – in June 1985, the (then) man behind the feathers admitted to helping to procure cocaine for some of the ballplayers. He allegedly smuggled it in the beak of the parrot.

He also got a one-game susension in 1987 when he threw a Nerf ball at first base umpire Fred Brocklander after he blew a call.

But they still love the Parrot in Pittsburgh …

When the Expos packed up and left Canada, they took their sub-par baseball skills with them but left poor Youppi! behind.

But the ballclub still understood one of the cardinal rules of baseball – if you are going to suck, you’d better have a mascot. Enter Screech.

I’ll give Washington credit for the Bald Eagle – D.C. is the National capitol and the Bald Eagle is the National Bird … but that looks more like an Eaglet (a baby Eagle) instead of a full grown Ass-Kicking Symbol of the USA.

And why did they name it after Dustin Diamond’s character in Saved by the Bell? He’s the third D.C.-based sports club to have an Eagle mascot, with Talon (D.C. United) and SlapShot (Capitals) already in town.

Screech is apparently trying to clean up Washington D.C. – Good Luck with that.
