Crazy Crab clawed Dinger into extinction, so it’s time for another First Round matchup.

We head to the Primate Division, where Baseball’s resident zymurgist takes on some guys who are probably in your wallet.  Your vote will decide who moves on to face the Swinging Friar.

#3 Bernie Brewer (Milwaukee) vs #6 The Racing Presidents (Washington)

Bernie Brewer of the Milwaukee BrewersThe Racing Presidents of The Washington Nationals

Bernie Brewer

Bernie the Brewer - Old Style (wait - that’s made in LaCrosse)Milwaukee was once the number one beer producing city in the world.  Four German immigrants (Miller, Blatz, Pabst and Schlitz) paved Milwaukee’s legacy as BrewTown.

So it’s fitting that Milwaukee’s baseball team be named the Brewers.  And their mascot be a mustachioed and lederhosen-clad Brewmaster.

Bernie was born in 1970 after 69-year old Milt Mason camped atop the County Stadium scoreboard until the Brewers drew a crowd of 40,000.

A few years later, the Brewers built their new mascot (not Milt) a chalet above the bleachers - and after Brewers’ Home Runs, Bernie would slide down into a ginormous beer stein.  Who hasn’t dreamed that dream?

Unfortunately, the giant stein didn’t make it to Miller Park.  A slide did.

Hey Sentry Foods and Bartolotta Fireworks - you owe me ad revenue.  Pay Up.

Bud Selig (then-owner of the Brewers) didn’t want a mascot.  That makes Bernie even more awesome to me.   Unfortunately, this is the only video of Bernie I could find.

The Racing Presidents

Mount Rushmore loves the Racing PresidentsThey’re the only MLB Mascots to have a National Monument.

Or is Mount Rushmore the only National Monument to have MLB Mascots?

The Presidents are a rip off of the Milwaukee Brewers’ Racing Sausages, but they seem to work.  Watching giant-headed versions of George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Rossevelt run around is just hilarious.  And considering their NL-Worst 58-76 record, sometimes the best part of a Nats game is the Presidents Race in the fourth inning.

Racings Presidents George Washington and Abe Lincoln battle for Presidential Supremacy

Teddy Roosevelt Racing BobbleheadThe Nationals have had some fun with this race, with a great running gag at the expense of The Rough Rider, President Teddy Roosevelt.

You see, the 26th president has never won a race, even though he’s had the most ingenious attempts to win (cheating).  I don’t know which is worse - losing every race or having Robin Williams portray you in a movie.

Maybe he will finally win one this Saturday, Sept 1, when his bobblehead is handed out.

Who is the better Mascot - Bernie Brewer or The Racing Presidents?

  • The Racing Presidents (Washington Nationals) (75%)
  • Bernie Brewer (Milwaukee Brewers) (25%)

Hey, the Nats are tied for the NL-worst record; at least they’re not alone at the bottom.
