There’s about 36 hours left in the Racing Pierogi-Righty/Lefty battle, in which the Pierogi are off to a decent lead (they are racers, you know) …

Time for another matchup … Let’s head back to the Feather Division for a battle between an Avian Mascot Legend … and a bird you’ve probably never heard of …

#2 The Famous Chicken (San Diego Padres) vs. #7 Dandy (New York Yankees)

The Famous ChickenDandy - the mascot of the New York Yankees

The Chicken and one of his Schticks#2 The Famous Chicken

I’ve already caught flak for the Chicken’s #2 seed in the Feather Division.  And probably deservedly so.

But the Swinging Friar rules San Diego right now.

The San Diego Chicken was hatched in 1974 when a then unknown SDSU student volunteered for a one-week gig with radio station KGB.

The Original San Diego Chicken costumeHe’d wear a crappy-looking chicken suit for a week at the San Diego Zoo.  The student offered his services (for free) to do the same at the San Diego Padres games.

And thus the legend was born.

The Chicken has entertained millions of fans across the nation and has been the guest of musicians, celebrities, and dignitaries around the world.

The Chicken and two Presidents

And he puts on a great show.

The reclusive Dandy of the New York Yankees#7 Dandy

In the early 1980’s, George Steinbrenner commissioned the designers who created the Phillie Phanatic to create a mascot for the New York Yankees.  They came up with the birdlike Dandy … as in “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”

The Yankees never let poor Dandy onto the field or out in public - instead, he was relegated to the Upper Deck of Yankee Stadium (uh oh) … where rumor has it he was beaten up by Yankee fans who didn’t want a mascot.  Now there’s a shock.  Dandy lasted maybe a couple years.  This thing was destined for failure even before George Steinbrenner forgot the Yankees had a mascot.  Steinbrenner “has no recollection” of the mascot.

That is the only known picture of the Yankees’ short-lived mascot, so guess what? No video.

Who is the better Mascot - The Famous Chicken or Dandy ?

  • The Famous Chicken (San Diego) (90%)
  • Dandy (New York Yankees) (10%)

Total Votes: 69

You know, I don’t really know why I’m even posting a poll for this matchup.

Voting ends Wednesday, August 15 at Midnight EDT.

    I don’t think even I would vote for Dandy….

this may be the first shutout.

  2. Devine Demolition Crew says:

I believe Danady received his fair share of Hitchhikers in the UD of Yankee Stadium. Poor Mascot. He never had a chance.

  3. Doug says:

How is Dandy a 7 seed? Actually, how did Dandy even make the cut for this? Anyway, that video for the chicken is pretty damn entertaining. Nice to see Charles Johnson playing along.

Blow out. Chicken wins. My seven year-old watched the clips and loved them. Then he raises the uncomfortable question I’ve feared…

No, not about the bird and the bees. Something more important…

“Do the Cubs (our local team) have a mascot”? He asks.

What the heck do I tell him? This is awkward. The Cubs represent a megawatt broadcast community. Surely they have a mascot I think to myself?

Truth is, the closest things the Cubs have had to a mascot are Marla Collins (where is she now?) and Ronnie Woo-Woo (for anyone outside Chicago this will require a Google search).

Any advice out there for my seven year old?

My advice to your 7 year old….

Do not, under any circumstances, tell him about Ronnie Woo-Woo!!!!

And I thought the mascot was a goat? :)

    I smell a post coming on …

Richie…..HRD has made it onto cnnsi.com!

    Nicely done…

For finding this, anti-Yankee articles should be banned for a month.

Isn’t Steve Bartman the cubs mascot?

I would also like to say, while I hate the Yankees more then any other sporting franchise (except the Cubs), this mascot was made for the yanks, Although I will agree that the Chicken is in a completly different league then Dandy, the fact is the Chicken did not even wear the Padres colors, or anything that makes him the Padres Mascot. That is why he got my vote, Dandy was made for baseball.
