Jon Miller Broadcasts Baseball on ESPNSo this past Sunday night, during the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball telecast of the Mets-Cubs game – which also happened to be Tom Glavine’s 300th career victory) there was some typically horrible broadcasting.

But this time it wasn’t Joe Morgan’s doing.

During the game, ESPN play-by-play man Jon Miller had these priceless words while the cameras were on the Cubs’ Derrek Lee (paraphrased since I forgot to record the game) …

And now for the Cubs … Carlos Lee

Derrek Lee and Carlos Lee were NOT separated at birthOops.  Hey Jon – Carlos Lee doesn’t play for the Cubs and he never has.

Well, during the commercial break, someone on ESPN’s crack production squad must have told Miller that Carlos Lee doesn’t play for the Cubs and that Derrek Lee is the Cubs’ first baseman, so he issued a “correction” (again, paraphrased) …

Folks, before the break, I misidentified the Cubs first baseman, Derrek Lee, as being Carlos Lee.  Carlos Lee plays up in Milwaukee, where he signed a big long-term contract over the offseason.

D’oh.  Carlos Lee plays for the Houston Astros.  And he hasn’t played for the Brewers in over a year; the Brewers traded him to the Texas Rangers on 7/28/2006.

Also during that same game, we have some aweome video of Miller missing the cue that he’s back on live television.

Okay, the production quality of the clip wasn’t that awesome … but Miller’s doubletake is.

Man, I’ve always liked him, too. Way better than most of the other yahoos they have.

Miller has always been a solid announcer. He knows so much about the game and, unlike Morgan, knows when to shut the hell up. I guess all the time he’s spent around Joe is beginning to wear on his mental capabilities. As for Joe’s next slip-up, I’m betting Miller introduces Derrek Lee as Lee Smith.

Even worse than Miller’s goof was Morgan later in that game on a pop-up that Luis Castillo caught but struggled with because of the wind. The brilliant Morgan said it was because Castillo had spent his whole career in the AL and was unfamiliar with how pop-ups react to the wind at Wrigley. Um…Joe…Castillo was a Marlin for 9 YEARS, so he played in Wrigley once or twice (including the 2003 NLCS…a painful memory for us Cub fans that were there for Game 6…still not over it). Joe Morgan is an idiot.
